Granite is a granular crystalline rock of quartz found in many different colours. Known as the everlasting stone, Granite is very solid, lacking porous characteristics.
The face of a Granite Memorial is often highly polished. Polished areas are very easy to clean as dirt cannot take hold on the shiny surface. The sides and reverse of a Granite Memorial can be polished, honed or rustic. A rustic surface will collect dirt, moss and lichen due to its rough texture.
To clean the rustic or honed faces of a Granite Memorial, use the same method as for Natural Stone and Marble.
To clean the highly polished face of a Granite Memorial, use a cuttlefish. The abrasive action of rubbing the soft side of the cuttlefish on the dirty area will clean the memorial and restore the shine. You may use a very soft-bristled brush and soapy water to clean lettering. Never use cream cleaner, an abrasive or scourer to clean a polished Granite Memorial as this can permanently spoil the finish.
Points to Remember
- Do use the soft side of cuttlefish to clean polished surfaces.
- Do use clear bleach and a hard-bristled brush on honed and rustic surfaces.
- Don’t use any cream cleaners or abrasive scourers to clean polished surfaces.
- Don’t scrub any gilded letters with a hard-bristled brush. Use a soft brush and soapy water.
- Professional cleaning and restoration services (Need Picture Here from Leaflet)
Time and weather take their toll on any memorial. The build-up of several years’ grime is difficult to remove simply with soapy water and a soft brush. Lettering can fall out or become illegible; gold leaf can fade away.
