Funds for our plans are typically held in secure trusts or life insurance policies until the time they are needed, in line with FCA guidelines, so you can be confident your investment is safe and will be there to cover your services when the time comes.
Our funeral plans are offered under the branding of The Co-operative Funeralcare a name you might recognise for its long-standing reputation in the UK funeral sector. However, even though the plan administration is through the Co-op Funeralcare network, your plan will specify that the funeral will be carried out by Lines Bannister Funeral Directors, your chosen local funeral home. This way, you get the best of both worlds: the strength and security of a national provider and the personal touch of our independent, community focused team.
What Do Our Funeral Plans Include?
Each plan will detail exactly which goods and services are included. We’ll make sure you understand things like which third-party fees (also known as disbursements) are covered. For example, our plans usually set aside a contribution towards third-party costs such as the minister or officiant’s fee, doctors’ fees (if applicable), and the crematorium or interment fee. In some fully guaranteed plans, these third-party costs can be guaranteed too. We will explain these details clearly.

Our help and guidance with all the arrangements at the time of need, including the collection and care of the deceased, and organising the funeral service itself.
Depending on the plan level, a certain type of coffin is included (from a simple respectful coffin in basic plans up to a more high-end coffin in premium plans). You can always specify your preference and upgrade within the plan if desired.
This includes care of the deceased at our funeral home, use of our private reflection room (chapel of rest) for visits, and provision of a hearse on the day of the funeral to the crematorium or cemetery. Some plans also include one or more limousines for family mourners.
Whether at a crematorium, cemetery, or other venue, we will organise the booking and make all arrangements for the service. The plan can include the fees for cremation or an allowance towards burial costs, depending on your choice.
Just as with an at need funeral, when the time comes, we’ll guide your family through all the necessary paperwork (like registration of death) and make sure everything in the plan is carried out smoothly. We will also provide a courtesy follow-up for any additional assistance needed.
Tailoring a Plan to Your Wishes
While we have set plan packages (often these come in tiers, for example: Simple, Traditional, and Exclusive plans), we understand that everyone’s wishes are different. We are happy to help you tailor a plan. Perhaps you have very specific requests like a horse-drawn carriage or a particular type of flowers or extra limousines. It’s possible to add special requests to most plans, and we can advise on how those are handled (in some cases, it might involve an additional charge, which can be paid into the plan). During the planning discussion, we’ll note down any personal wishes you want recorded. Even if you’re not certain about some details, we can include your general preferences. For instance, you might note “I’d like a non-religious celebration of life, not in a church,” or “I’d prefer mourners to wear bright colours.” These instructions are kept on file to guide your family. And don’t worry – your plan isn’t set in stone; you can update your wishes later if you change your mind about something, and we can adjust the plan accordingly.
How to Purchase or Pay for a Plan
Buying a funeral plan with us is straightforward. You can do it in a relaxed face-to-face meeting at our funeral home, or we can even arrange it over the phone or by post if that’s easier for you. We will go through a short application, choose the plan level and any extras with you, and set up the payment method that suits you best. Plans can be paid in a single lump sum or in instalments (spread over 6 or 12 months at no extra cost, or even up to 5 or 10 years with a small additional fee for interest, depending on your age and circumstances). We’ll explain all the payment options. Many people choose to pay in one go or over a year, so it’s settled and gives immediate peace of mind. If you do opt for instalments over more than a year, rest assured the plan is still guaranteed after an initial period – we’ll clarify the terms based on the plan provider’s conditions.
Importantly, once your plan is in place, you will receive a Funeral Plan Certificate and documentation outlining your plan details. Make sure to keep this with your important papers and let your close family know you have a plan and where the documents are kept. However, even if the paperwork gets misplaced, your details will be securely stored in our system and with our plan partner, so your family only needs to contact us at the time of need and we will have all the information.
